Job Description:
The Engineering Service Manager is responsible for planning, directing, and overseeing the day-to-day operations of the engineering service department to ensure the efficient delivery of maintenance, repair, installation, and technical support services. The role involves managing engineering staff, coordinating service activities, allocating resources, maintaining equipment reliability, ensuring compliance with safety and engineering standards, and supporting the company’s operational objectives. The Engineering Service Manager works closely with clients, suppliers, contractors, and internal departments to improve service quality, maximize equipment performance, and promote continuous operational improvement.
Roles & Responsibilities
- Leadership & Management
- Plan, organize, and oversee the day-to-day operations of the Engineering Services Department.
- Lead, supervise, and motivate engineering technicians, mechanics, electricians, and maintenance personnel to achieve departmental objectives.
- Develop departmental goals, key performance indicators (KPIs), and operational plans aligned with company objectives.
- Prepare work schedules, assign tasks, and allocate manpower and resources efficiently.
- Monitor employee productivity, conduct performance evaluations, and provide coaching, mentoring, and professional development.
- Identify staff training requirements and promote continuous learning and technical competency.
- Engineering Operations
- Manage preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance programs to maximize equipment reliability and minimize downtime.
- Oversee the maintenance, repair, servicing, and inspection of machinery, vehicles, facilities, and engineering equipment.
- Approve technical repair methods, engineering solutions, and maintenance procedures to ensure quality and compliance.
- Coordinate the installation, commissioning, testing, and upgrading of engineering equipment and systems.
- Monitor engineering projects to ensure they are completed safely, on schedule, within budget, and according to specifications.
- Analyze equipment performance and implement continuous improvement initiatives to enhance operational efficiency.
- Technical Support & Quality Assurance
- Provide technical leadership and expert guidance for complex mechanical, electrical, and engineering issues.
- Review engineering reports, maintenance records, equipment history, and technical documentation for accuracy and completeness.
- Develop, implement, and maintain engineering standards, operating procedures, and quality assurance programs.
- Identify and introduce new technologies, engineering solutions, and best practices to improve productivity and service delivery.
- Investigate equipment failures, identify root causes, and implement corrective and preventive actions.
- Asset & Inventory Management
- Manage the lifecycle of engineering assets, including maintenance planning, replacement, and disposal.
- Monitor inventory levels of spare parts, tools, consumables, and engineering materials to ensure operational readiness.
- Coordinate procurement activities for engineering equipment, parts, and services in accordance with company procurement procedures.
- Evaluate supplier performance, negotiate service agreements, and manage engineering contractors.
- Maintain accurate maintenance records, asset registers, equipment documentation, and warranty information.
- Safety, Compliance & Risk Management
- Ensure compliance with occupational health and safety legislation, environmental regulations, and company policies.
- Develop and implement workplace safety procedures, emergency response plans, and safe work practices.
- Conduct regular workplace inspections, risk assessments, and safety audits to identify and mitigate hazards.
- Ensure all engineering operations comply with applicable engineering codes, technical standards, and regulatory requirements.
- Promote a strong safety culture through staff training, toolbox meetings, and continuous safety awareness.
- Financial & Operational Management
- Prepare and manage annual engineering operating and maintenance budgets.
- Monitor maintenance expenditure, operational costs, and resource utilization to ensure cost-effective service delivery.
- Identify cost-saving opportunities while maintaining equipment reliability and service quality.
- Prepare daily, weekly, monthly, and annual engineering performance, maintenance, and budget reports.
- Analyze operational data and recommend improvements to support management decision-making and business objectives.
- Customer & Stakeholder Management
- Liaise with clients, suppliers, contractors, consultants, regulatory authorities, and internal departments on engineering matters.
- Ensure engineering services are delivered efficiently while maintaining high standards of customer service.
- Resolve technical issues, service interruptions, and customer concerns promptly and professionally.
- Support management in planning engineering projects, operational improvements, and strategic initiatives.
- Build and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders to support organizational success.
Selection Criteria
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in engineering services, maintenance management, or engineering operations, including at least 3 years in a supervisory or management role.
- Strong knowledge of engineering maintenance practices, equipment management, and technical troubleshooting.
- Sound understanding of workplace health and safety regulations, engineering standards, and environmental compliance.
- Experience in project management, preventive maintenance planning, and resource allocation.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, and Outlook; experience with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) is an advantage.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal abilities.
- Ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize workloads, and meet deadlines.
